Philippe shifted his weight back, reluctantly parting

from Tobias. “I am sorry, Tobias. I will be missed if I am any

later. I must go home, now.”

“No!” Tobias shook his head, but the long shadows of

evening had settled between the buildings before Philippe

had even arrived. It wasn"t as if they had anywhere they

could go, after all.

“I will see you tomorrow, and the day after that is

Sunday,” Philippe said, resting his forehead against the

other young man"s. “On Sunday, we can take food and go for

a walk.”

Sonndeg. It even sounded warm, like the sun, and

Tobias felt more kindly toward it than he ever had. “All right,

yes. Tomorrow, and Sunday.” He nodded and let his hands

fall away from Philippe, his annoyance with their separation

replaced by the tiniest flicker of an idea.

“Yes. Good night, Tobias.” Philippe smiled, kissed him

again—just a sweet little peck—and stepped back.

“Tomorrow!” And then he was gone.

Tobias sighed and stuck his hands in his pockets,

feeling mildly sorry for himself. Something on the ground

caught his eye, and he realized that Philippe had dropped

his hat—and that Philippe had to come back for it.

Tomorrow. The church bells began tolling the hour, and

Tobias tore out of the little alley, heading for Trysor House.

George hated it when he was late to dinner, and besides, he

wanted as much time as possible for raiding Caled"s library

and reading his spoils.
